Emergency crews in Warren County were called at around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, with reports of an explosion in Glens Falls at the UA Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 773 building, located near Luzerne and Veterans roads.
According to a statement from the City of Glens Falls, the men, ages 36 and 55, were setting up for a Thanksgiving gathering and had gone into a metal storage container to grab some folding tables.
They had just entered the container a second time when the explosion occurred, officials said.
The fire was still burning when several agencies arrived, including the Glens Falls and West Glens Falls fire departments.
Both victims were flown by helicopter to Burlington Medical Center in Vermont.
Glens Falls spokesperson Tim Drawbridge told WTEN the men were alert and talking shortly after the explosion.
One of the men said he had smelled gas when he first opened the container’s door, officials said.
While extinguishing the fire, crews discovered two grills inside, both accompanied by 20 pound propane tanks.
The grills and tanks were removed from the container and rendered safe, officials said.
An official cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
